Gertrude Ann Lyrek passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, September 10, 2016 with her family by her side. She was born on June 27, 1927 in Winsted, Minnesota. She was the fifth of eleven children born to Alois and Louise Remer.

Gertrude attended Holy Trinity School up to the eighth grade. After finishing school she worked at the local creamery and various other jobs until her marriage. She was united in marriage to Edward Joseph Lyrek on October 28, 1947 at Holy Trinity Church in Winsted, Minnesota.

Ed and Gert were blessed with ten children. She is survived by her children: Gordon (Sue) of Watkins, Minnesota; Geraldine (Larry) of St. Louis, Missouri; Christine (Tim) Schaar of Montrose, Minnesota; Mary (Chad) Mikalunas of Morrisville, New York; Edward of Montrose, Minnesota; and Robert of Montrose, Minnesota; daughter-in-law Judy Lyrek of Eaton, New York. She was preceded in death by her husband Ed in 2006 and children Katherine, David, Jeffrey and Lawrence.

Gert has twenty three grandchildren: Joseph Lyrek, Wayne Lyrek; David Lyrek and Lisa Bizzell, Brian Lyrek and Lynn Charette, Ben Webber, Travis Schaar, Sarah Schaar and Hannah Schaar, Aaron Dooley and Jesse Liddle, Tasha Blake, Michael Welter, Gabe Lyrek, Matt Lyrek, Jon Lyrek, Zachary Lyrek and Alexis Lyrek, Cordarrel Lyrek, Amber Lyrek, Dillon Lyrek and Brandon Lyrek; 26 great grandchildren. Also surviving Gert are her siblings: Roseanne Moore, Margaret Huhn, Eileen Berron, and Walter Remer.  She was preceded in death by her sisters Isabel Lindberg, Eleanor Birkholz, Marie Getz and Agnes Yurek; brothers Ronald and Raymond Remer.

Gert was a homemaker her entire marriage. She always had a large garden and did a lot of canning and baking to feed her family. She also worked side by side with her husband and children on the farm. Gert babysat for many of her grandchildren over the years. Gert was a faithful dedicated prayerful woman. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly since 1954.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Mary in Waverly, Minnesota. Visitation was held in the St. Mary’s Parish Center on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation continued on Wednesday from 9 to 10:15 in the parish center prior to Mass.
