Patty “Dolly” Ogle Campbell age 65 of Waverly, passed away peacefully at home November 26, 2014 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends including her husband, sons, brothers, daughters-in law, grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Born in Minneapolis, November 14, 1949 to Harold and Marie Ogle, she grew up in Waverly and attended St. Mary”s Catholic School. She attended the University of Minnesota and continued her education at St. Cloud State University where she graduated with a degree in Special Education. During college she met and married her life partner, Joe Campbell on Sept 6, 1969.
In addition to teaching special needs children in the Dassel-Cokato school system for 30 years, Patty was active in many organizations including the American Legion Auxiliary, Waverly Boosters, Lakeshore Association, Humphrey Memorial committee, Waverly Ambassador program and St. Mary”s Catholic Church.
With her career and life dedicated to improving the lives of youth, many of her challenges in committee work were directed toward young people. As a Legion Auxiliary officer, her main joy was recruiting young girls to attend Girls State each year.
At St. Mary”s parish, she started a project training high school students to videotape the Mass for playing to nursing home residents.
Patty was a driving force on the committee to create a memorial for Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Her family knew the Humphreys well and her inspiration for special education began when she babysat for a Humphrey grandchild who had Down Syndrome.
In 1994, she was asked to create a town royalty program for Waverly”s 125 celebration. She has been dedicated to building the program ever since and was recognized by the Minneapolis Aquatennial this year for 20 years of leadership. She received many awards for teaching and volunteering over the years. Recently an article in the Herald Journal stated, “Patty Campbell enjoys making her hometown of Waverly a good place to live.
