Rick Lee Doering
April 2, 2018
Rick Lee Doering, age 65 of Delano, passed away April 2, 2018 after courageously battling cancer with dignity and grace. He truly perceived his diagnosis as a “win-win” situation saying, “I win if I beat the cancer, and I win when I get to go to Heaven”.
Rick was born to Orlin and Orvella (Bullert) Doering on May 5, 1952 in Cokato, MN. He was baptized on June 1, 1952 at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, MN. He attended grade school at St. James Lutheran Church and School where he was confirmed on April 3, 1966. Rick graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1970 and Gustavus Adolphus College in 1974. He worked as a manager for Burger King for 5 years before spending 31 years at BFI/Republic Services. Here he was fortunate to hold a variety of jobs: Sales Rep, General Manager, Area Sales Manager, and assisted in Acquisitions. Since retiring from Republic Services, Rick spent several years doing part-time consulting work for Russ Schweihs in environmental services.
Rick was united in marriage to Karen Frey on July 9, 1977 in Ann Arbor, MI. He loved her with all his heart enjoying every minute of their marriage. Their marriage was blessed with a loving companionship, three wonderful children and a commitment to the Lord. They first lived in Mound and later built their home in Delano in 1984, where they have since resided.
Rick was known for his love of food/desserts, sense of humor, pragmatic attitude, and his warm smile. His children and grandchildren were the absolute delight of his life. Spending time and playing with them was always a top priority. Rick never missed an activity or sporting event and was their greatest cheerleader, supporter and advisor. He continued to be the rock of his family until the end. Hours before he passed, Rick awoke and saw his wife and children surrounding the bed. He looked at each, smiled and said repeatedly, “Wow. What a life!”, “This has been real special”, and “I love my family”.
Rick willingly gave his time in service to the church. He enjoyed positions of leadership and was honored to serve his Lord in many capacities. At Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, he served as President, Vice President among many other board positions in addition to serving as Treasurer and Chairman at West Lutheran High School. Many often sought his counsel when issues arose as he had a reputation for being fair and honest.
He was truly amazing!
Rick was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife Karen; children Scott (Lindsay), Julie (Micah) Martin and Krista (Andy) Giefer; grandchildren Chase, Olivia, Josiah, Nora, Mara, and Jonah; sisters Durene (Bob) Rogers and Sheri Doering Fenn and nephews Andrew, Eric, Nick and Michael.
Funeral Services were held at 11 am on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Delano. Visitation was Friday, 4 – 8 pm and continued Saturday, 10 – 11 am prior to the service, ALL at the church. Interment was in Mt. Olive East Cemetery in Delano.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
