Mary Ann Smith, age 78 of Atwater, formerly of the Minneapolis and Hopkins/Minnetonka areas, passed away on May 11, 2017. She was born on June 26, 1938 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the only child of Edward and Margaret (DeFoe) Tait.

Mary Ann graduated from St. Margaret’s Academy in Minneapolis. She then attended the College of St. Theresa in Winona.

Mary Ann was united in marriage to Clayton Smith on October 11, 1958 at St. Albert the Great Church in Minneapolis. Over the years, she volunteered for many organizations. She enjoyed genealogy, traveling and above all, spending time with her family.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Clayton; 6 children Daniel (Sue), Michael (Diann), Lorna (Michael) Dobihal, Pamela (James) Schrankler, Amy Nesgoda, and Steve (Michelle); 18 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 AM on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at the Church of St. Mary in Waverly. Gathering of family and friends was Wednesday, from 9:30-11 AM in the St. Mary Parish Center prior to the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
