Janice Yvonne (Monnie) Daly,“Jan”, age 81, died on Saturday. Jan was a wonderful mother and friend to many, always welcoming, warm, funny, loyal, altruistic, devout and kind. She loved her book clubs, her church groups, any gathering of friends and family. She was a great cook and baker, spending much time planning for good meals and treats, making lists, shopping…she called us in from outside for dinner by ringing a loud bell (it worked!). She made someone feel important with a red ‘You Are Special’ plate at the table. She was frugal (still used the original ironing board from the beginning of her marriage). She was a genuinely GOOD person. She would never call herself a feminist, yet she believed in the strength and independence of women. She was a devout Catholic and she lived it every day. She had no patience for rude people or robo-calls. She enjoyed Elvis Presley, The Celtic Women, Little House on the Prairie and Judge Judy. She was a member of the Snow Birds, a family snowmobiling club and loved weekend runs, often ending up at The Choo Choo for wings at the piano bar. She appreciated the lake life; sunbathing on the dock, the sound of water lapping at the shoreline, watching the kids waterski (she tried it only once…didn’t ‘get up’ but didn’t let go of the rope either). She particularly loved the Cross Lake cabin, family weekends up there, games of Hearts with her kids, games of Spoons with the grandkids. She enjoyed crocheting and every one of the grand and great grandkids received a blanket.

Jan was born in Browerville, MN. She moved to Mpls after high school, worked as a secretary and met her husband Bill at an after-work party. They married in 1960. The family moved out to Lake Sarah near Loretto in 1972 and joined the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was very active in the church, on committees, sponsoring confirmation candidates, perpetual adoration and more. She made pilgrimages to Medjugorjy and shrines; to Italy, to Ireland…Jan loved to travel.

Jan is preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Catherine (Fisher) Monnie, her brother Dennis Monnie, her husband of 58 years William ‘Bill’ Daly, and her son Daniel Daly.

Jan is survived by 5 children; Colleen (Kevin) Wald, Shannon (Ron) Winterhalter, Megan (Jeff) Dobberpuhl, Tim (Tracy) Daly, and Sean Daly, 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Loretto. Gathering of family and friends was one hour prior to Mass in the church.
